THE REALIST

I’m a realist, but that doesn’t necessarily make this decision any easier. My grandfather is drawing close to the end of his life – now there isn’t any one thing that makes this fact imminent right now, but he is at a point where he can’t be alone because he can’t effectively care for himself. I’ve begun my search for Chicago long term care solutions other that nursing homes, but I haven’t had a whole lot of luck as of yet. I can’t rightfully keep him at my house because I’m always traveling for work – I would have to hire a live in nurse which just isn’t practical on my salary. My parents aren’t in any condition to care for him and my brother is about the least responsible person on the face of the earth. I’m not quite sure where to turn, in the meantime, we are all taking turns in a communal effort but that won’t last forever and as time goes on he’ll surely need more care than we are capable of providing. I was hoping to find a reasonably priced assisted living environment, but price and availability both seem to be a serious issue there. I want him to be comfortable and well cared for, I just hope I have enough time and money to find a suitable situation.
